Tests required for finished anchor chain

All finished chain cables are to be subjected to proof and breaking tests in the presence of the Surveyor according to recognized standards. Do not apply paint or anti-corrosion coating on the anchor chain for this purpose.

Proof test: Each section of anchor chain (27.5m) shall be tested on an approved testing machine according to the proof load specified for the corresponding grade of anchor chain. When the load is unloaded, each section of the chain, including its dimensions, is to be tested, there should be no obvious defects, and the permanent elongation should not exceed 5% of the original length.

Breaking test: The surveyor select one chain from each batch that not more than four chains, cut samples with not less than 3 links, and conduct the test according to the specified breaking load. During the test, the breaking load shall be maintained for at least 30s. The test links shall be made in the same manufacturing process as the anchor chain, welded and heat treated together with the anchor chain. The test links are to be removed from the anchor chain in the presence of the Surveyor. If the tensile force of the testing machine is not enough for the large-diameter anchor chain to do the breaking test, other equivalent methods are to be used for the test in consultation with the ship inspection agency. The test specimen is considered to have passed the test if the specimen does not break after applying the specified load.
